Kundalini Yoga

Introductory Chant

At the start of each Kundalini Yoga class, we tune in with the mantra “Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo” three times. This signals the beginning of your Kundalini Yoga practice. The mantra translates to “I bow down to the divine consciousness/teacher within me.” The introductory chant is a reminder that your practice is about your inner experiences and that your sources of transformation lie within you. Here are 5 tips when tuning into your practice:

1. Press your tongue to the the roof of your mouth when chanting "Ong"

This stimulates your pituitary glands (the body’s master gland) that regulates your vital body functions, controls your hormone-secreting glands and influences your general wellbeing.

2. Sit with a straight spine.

Sit up tall, spine is straight, chin slightly tucked into your chest and the back of your neck is long. Notice the difference in how you feel with a simple posture adjustment!

3. Roll your eye gaze up to the centre of your forehead.

During the tune in, close your eyes and roll your gaze up to the centre of your forehead (also known as your ‘third eye’). This stimulates the pituitary glands, activates your higher centres, and connects you to your higher consciousness. By doing this, you will be preparing yourself to be guided by your inner wisdom during your practice.

4. Go into it with an open mind.

Chanting mantras might seem strange to you if you’re new to it. Take advantage of the chance to chant and sing, let your voice out and embrace this new experience. It will help you express yourself and experience the effects of chanting.

5. Take a few moments to experience the sensations after the tune in.

Observe any difference in how you feel after these three rounds of chanting. Set an intention for your practice and be present to whatever comes up.
