What if I feel too embarrassed to chant?

5 Tips for Chanting in Your Kundalini Yoga Practice

"What if I feel too embarrassed to chant?"

Chanting is a vital component in our Kundalini Yoga practice. We begin each class with an introductory chant, and you’ll frequently encounter mantra chanting throughout the kriya. If you are new to the practice, chanting out loud in a yoga class might feel strange at first. Here are 5 tips that might help you feel more at ease in your next class.

1. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

You do not need to chant if it will make you feel stressed out.

Our Kundalini Yoga classes offers you a chance to turn inward, relax, and let the kriya transform your subtle and energetic systems. If chanting aloud makes you self-conscious, it can detract from the experience. Feel free to start by humming along or simply listening until you’re comfortable joining in. As I always say- this is your practice, so do what you can today and feel good about it!

2. Understand that each mantra in the kriya is chosen for a specific purpose.

Each sound has a specific healing effect on your body.

Chanting mantras have specific effects on your brain, glands and organs.
In every kriya, there is a reason behind every chant, just like there is a reason for any sequence of breath work and movements. Each mantra is different and serves a unique purpose when chanted.

Try chanting the mantra “Aad Such, Jugaad Such, Hay Bhee Such, Nanak Hosee Bhee Such” repeatedly for three minutes. Emphasize on the “CH” sound by pulling your naval into your spine, creating a powerful “SUCH.” This is the mantra used in our ’empower your voice’ kriya.

Observe how you feel after.

Now, try chanting the mantra “oooom” for three minutes. Allow your breath to fully empty as you create an emphasis on the “mmm” sound at the end. This mantra makes you feel soothed and connected.

Take a moment to notice how you feel after. Do you feel the difference between the effects of these two mantras?

3. Get the meaning of the mantra.

Many of our Kundalini students found that knowing the meaning of the mantra helped them feel more confident to chant it out loud.

If ever you feel unsure or need clarification, don’t hesitate to raise your hand in class and ask.

4. Use this opportunity as a safe space to express yourself confidently and fearlessly.

Your voice is unique to you. When you empower your voice, you also empower yourself.

Even though this situation is new to you, use this opportunity to let go of the Ego Self that is trying to keep you safe. Embrace the moment to try something new and different. See how liberating you feel to empower yourself!

5. Know that everyone is in the same boat as you.

Everyone is there in class to have a transformative experience, just like you.

No one is there to judge you or listen whether you are chanting or not. This Kundalini practice is a unique experience for you, so allow yourself to go inward and experience the transformation from this practice.
