FAQs about Kundalini Yoga Attire

What to wear to your Kundalini Yoga practice

If you’re searched the term ‘Kundalini Yoga’ on Google, you might have seen pictures of people dressed in all-white with turbans. I have multiple times received inquiries about whether Kundalini Yoga is a cult. In this blog, we’ll clear up the three most frequently asked questions about suitable clothing and why practitioners might choose to wear these particular attire.

1. Do I have to wear all white?

Short answer: nope!

You can choose to wear any colour you want. This is your practice!

The reason why it is commonly practiced to wear white in Kundalini Yoga is because white is believed to represent the seven colours and expand your auric field. Additionally, white clothing strengthens one’s identity and serves as a filter against negativity in the environment. According to Yogi Bhajan, white clothing can also enhance your aura, extending it by one more foot than your natural aura length. This added foot of protection helps to deflect negative energies and radiate your positive energy.

I recommend that you try experimenting with different colours. Maybe try showing up to your practice wearing all white one day, just to see if you notice any effects- whether you feel more clear and radiant. Also, experiment with different coloured clothing and see whether it affects your practice. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what works best.

2. Do I have to wear a turban?

Short answer: nope! It is not necessary to wear a turban or headscarf to our Kundalini Yoga practice. Some reasons why practitioners might choose to wear a turban include:

Contain your energy

It is believed to influence the neurological system and electromagnetic field.

Feel more protected

Helps you to go easier in a deep meditative state.

Clarify your thoughts

Feel more centred and devoted to your practice when you wear it.

Sense of calm & wellbeing

So that you can be fully present in your practice and experience the full effect.

It is ultimately your choice.

If you are interested in trying out wearing a turban during your practice, wrap a large towel around your head (the same way as if after washing your hair). Notice any differences in how you feel during your practice. Experiment with different options to see what works best for you. You are always welcome to practice with or without a turban, as the space is there for you to explore and find what works for you.

3. Do I have to practice Kundalini Yoga on sheepskin?

Again, nope! Not necessary.

You do not need to use sheepskin when practicing Kundalini Yoga. The reason sheepskin is traditionally used because it is known to provide insulation from the electromagnetic field, so you are insulated from the pull of the earth. Additionally, it can be comfortable during long meditations. Ultimately, the decision to use it is up to you and incorporating it into your practice is a personal preference. If you choose not to use sheepskin, you can practice on a yoga mat, towel, blanket, or even your bed.

Experiment with different attires and see how you feel in your practice.

Choose a comfortable, natural fabric for practicing Kundalini Yoga. Try out various clothing, colors, and headwear to determine what feels best during your practice. The choice of what to wear is entirely up to you. Experiment with different attire to find the outfit that suits you best during your Kundalini Yoga practice. Remember, this is your practice, and you decide what works best for you.
